I stayed at Spa Samui for about 15 days and getting to shops is quick and cheap (around 40baht). There are 40baht "taxis" running all of the time. Watch out for the rainy season though... Chaweng is very touristy and noisy and Lamai is pretty seedy - lots of girly bars and stuff. If you stay in Chaweng away from the beach you can get cheap taxis/tuk tuks to the action; likewise, if you stay at Big Buddha Beach. Koh Samui is not that large.
